Hide Faces and License Plates in a Video

Hide faces and license plates with Auto Blur, then review individual Original settings and missed intervals. This example checks a bus plate and a pedestrian and adds manual coverage for the opening face and the plate’s fast exit.

Before you start
The dedicated 10-second sample shows a bus passing the camera while a pedestrian approaches on the left. Around 4 seconds, the front plate and the pedestrian’s face are visible together. Watch the source first and note when the plate leaves the frame and how the pedestrian moves.

This demonstration focuses on the foreground pedestrian and the bus’s front plate. Separately inspect faces reflected in the bus windows, distant people, and plates on receding vehicles, and add coverage where needed.
1. Enable Auto Blur and the detection categories
Open the video in Studio and enable Auto Blur with face and license-plate recognition. To review faces alone, temporarily turn the license-plate category off.
At about 4 seconds, enable license plates as well and keep Target effect set to Blur. Distinguish the bus route display and advertising images from the actual plate and pedestrian faces when checking coverage.
2. Check the individual effect after a canvas click
Clicking an automatically detected face or plate on the canvas can create or select an individual Original target. Even when you only intend to inspect its position, check the individual target editor on the right for a change in coverage.
In this example, clicking the bus plate shows it as Original, so its individual Target effect is returned to Blur on the right. If the plate should remain hidden, choose Blur and check that it becomes blurred again.
3. Keep one face clear or hide it again
At about 8.8 seconds, click the foreground pedestrian’s detected face and inspect its individual effect on the right. Leave it set to Original if you want that person to remain visible.
To hide the face as in this example, return its individual effect to Blur. Check that other faces and plates have not also been left as Original.
4. Cover the missed opening interval
Return to 0 seconds and inspect the face at its first appearance. In this example, the automatic face interval begins at about 0.8 seconds, so the opening is supplemented manually. In your own video, first locate the interval that is actually uncovered.
Choose Rectangle under Manual Blur and draw it around the foreground face at 0 seconds, leaving room around the edges. Check that the rectangle’s individual effect is Blur.
Select the rectangle and locate its purple active-range bar in the timeline. Keep the start at 0 seconds and move the right white handle to 1 second, limiting the supplemental range to 0–1 seconds. Choose Start tracking for this interval and wait for calculation to finish.
Recheck both sides of the 1-second boundary for a gap between the manual and automatic coverage. Correct the rectangle’s position and size at any frame where it drifts away from the moving face.
5. Cover the plate’s fast exit
Check whether the right end of the plate moves outside its mask as the bus leaves the frame. In this example, add another rectangle at 4 seconds and make it wide enough to cover the plate’s lower-right exit path through the image edge. Keep its individual effect set to Blur.
Select the new rectangle and set its active range in the timeline to 4.0–4.6 seconds. Do not start tracking for this region. It stays fixed over the fast exit path for 0.6 seconds, also blurring part of the bumper and road during that short interval.
Check just before 4 seconds, then at 4.2 and 4.44 seconds, making sure the last visible part of the plate remains inside the region. After 4.6 seconds, confirm that the plate has left the frame and the extra region has switched off. For your own video, choose the size and interval to match the actual path and exit time.
6. Review full playback
Confirm that both the playhead and the actual picture have returned to the opening frame, then play the entire video from 0 to 10 seconds. If only the timer changes while the previous picture remains, seek elsewhere and return to 0, checking the picture before playing.
Review the face supplement at 0–1 seconds, the plate’s exit region at 4.0–4.6 seconds, the pedestrian’s face later in the clip, and the moments when targets leave the frame.
If a forehead, chin, or plate edge becomes visible, or another target remains Original, pause, correct it, and replay the surrounding interval. A calculation-complete notice does not establish sufficient coverage of every face and plate.
7. Export a video file if needed
This demonstration covers the workflow through full playback in the editor. If you need an output file, follow the separate saving steps below.
After reviewing full playback, open Export at the top. Enter a file name and choose MP4, 720p, and Standard quality (general use). For another resolution, choose an available option in the dialog.
Review any displayed credits or plan conditions, then start the export. After it completes, use Download for the project to receive the file. Resolve any stated error before retrying.
8. Check the downloaded file
Open the saved MP4 in a separate player and replay it from beginning to end, checking face and plate entrances and exits, the 0–1-second face supplement, and the boundaries of the 4.0–4.6-second plate region. Check the saved file separately from editor playback; after further edits, export again and inspect the newly downloaded file.
